Figurine

Figurine is a self-initiated fashion photography series in which light, not colour, does the work.
Shot in Michiel Spijkers' daylight studio in Utrecht, the series moves between figures in dark, draped clothing and small clay and plaster sculptures on stands. Bodies fold and extend into graphic shapes, while the sculptures hold the same poses at object scale.
About the project
Figurine is a self-initiated fashion photography series, made without a client and without a brief. Where the commissioned work often leans on bold, controlled colour, this series strips the palette back to black, grey and skin and lets the shaping of daylight carry the frame.
Shot in Michiel Spijkers' own daylight studio in Utrecht, the series alternates between the body and the object. Models in dark, draped clothing fold, extend and balance into shapes that read as sculpture, while a set of clay and plaster figures on stands is photographed with the same attention as the people. Side by side, the two registers keep swapping roles: the figure becomes an object, the object holds a pose.
The work was published as an editorial in Flanelle Magazine, with styling by Jessey Rodrigus, hair and make-up by Daisy den Herder and lighting by Steyn van Rongen.
